Do You Know why Parents are Starting to Homeschool?

Interesting Reasons Why Parents Are Starting to Homeschool.

Do you know what the most common accusation directed at homeschooling parents is?

Most people opposed to homeschooling point out that it removes children from an appropriate amount of social opportunity and activity.

Do you know what the most common reason for removing children from the public school environment is?

Currently many parents are starting to homeschool their children due to conflicts with certain peer groups and unacceptable social situations.

That’s right, those public school proponents who are so busily shrieking about social isolation or a lack of appropriate peer interaction are failing the children in their own schools and classrooms.

How is that possible?

Consider that social behaviors shouldn’t be something taught in the rigid strictures of the classroom setting; it is just not a conducive environment to relaxed and natural behaviors.

What is the ideal setting for socialization?

Why so Many Parents are Starting to Homeschool

Good Role Models

Children seem to learn best when they are at play, and they learn how to socialize best when they are unfettered by the formalities of the classroom.

Family settings and extracurricular activities can provide the ideal environments for successfully acquiring critical social skills and habits.

It is important to remember that children who are homeschooled are not kept in some dark closet, but are interacting with their adult teacher/parent, any siblings they have and also participating in an average two or more social and community functions outside of their home.

Statistics indicate that homeschooled people are highly socialized, mature and well-rounded people, capable of interacting with a wide range of individuals from all backgrounds and walks of life.

This must be a much more beneficial skill than the age-specific limitations of a classroom.

Further Reasoning

Of course all of this does not mean that all parents are starting to homeschool to remove their children from inadequate socialization or hostile settings.

Historically, homeschoolers have pointed out weak academics, a desire for a philosophical or religious basis to their child’s education, and an interest in strengthening their families bonds as the other reasons for homeschooling.

Today the homeschooling population represents approximately two million of the country’s children.

It also represents around sixteen billion dollars that taxpayers are spared in educational expense.

Are these people starting to homeschool for valid reasons? Do the school systems actually fail to meet an acceptable level?

Are there problems in peer groups and socialization?

Tough Answers

Let’s look at the classroom and public school system to find some of the answers to those questions.

Children of the same age, all of them unique and different, are commonly placed into a single classroom with a teacher and perhaps a teacher’s aide.

Some schools permit parent volunteerism in the classroom as well.

In this situation, where there may be twenty or more students, education has to become a “one size fits all” arrangement in order to serve such a diverse population.

There will be children with learning disabilities and there will be children with remarkable gifts, but this classroom and school system design cannot slow down, stop or expand to meet their many needs.

Does that sound like an acceptable academic level? Doesn’t sound like an insufficiency?

What about peer group issues, or problems with socialization?

It is probably a good idea to imagine entering some public space like the Department of Motor Vehicles or some other formal agency.

Will you feel comfortable socializing in this place?

The chairs are formally arranged, there are signs indicating what you should or should not do. You are more than likely feeling a bit restrained.

These are the some of the same variety of constraints placed upon healthy socialization in the typical classroom environment.

While some might argue that school is for learning, they would only be confirming the validity of the argument of those parents starting to homeschool due to social problems.

If you cannot interact until a break between classes or during lunch, then how is it possible to learn the proper ways of socializing?

More parents are starting to homeschool every year, and it is fairly easy to see why.

They can provide a one on one experience, offer supervised and healthy social opportunities and ensure their children are receiving the richest and most comprehensive educations possible.
