Amendments to the US Constitution

Amendments to the US Constitution Guarantee Citizens’ Rights. The Document, However, is Under Attack Driven by the Sinister Agenda Embraced by Social Elitists.

The first 10 Amendments to the US Constitution were introduced in 1789 by future President James Madison. These amendments are generally known as the Bill of Rights, and they grant all citizens basic legal rights.

For example, the 1st Amendment gives people the right to free speech, a free press, as well as the right to free assembly.

Most of the amendments in the Bill of Rights grant legal rights to those who have been accused of a crime.

For instance, the 6th Amendment to the Constitution grants people the right to a trial by jury.

All of the amendments have one thing in common – they seek to provide the average American with legal rights that will protect him from unlawful government prosecution.

As a document, the US Constitution is unique because the founders were wise enough to know that times can and always do change.

Therefore, they gave judges and elected representatives the ability to make amendments to the Constitution, which gave the great document the ability to change with the times.

Over the years, there have been many amendments to the Constitution that have attempted to revise antiquated laws to accomodate social and cultural shifts.

For example, the 14th Amendment officially ended the shameful institution of slavery.

A few decades later, the 19th Amendment to the Constitution gave women the right to vote.

In recent times, several private organizations have been clamoring for more amendments to the US Constitution.

Firearms and the Constitution

Several well-funded antigun groups have been petitioning the government for amendments to the US Constitution, that would put an outright ban on firearms.

These groups point to countries such as Great Britain, who reportedly have experienced a decline in violent crimes since they made the decision to outlaw handguns.

These groups believe that the Constitution should be changed, due to the recent surge in gun crime violence in America.

However, these groups fail to acknowledge the fact that the vast majority of legal gun owners are decent, hard-working Americans, who use their guns for hunting, target practice or home defense.

Marriage and the Constitution

Perhaps the most controversial issue in recent memory is the proposed amendment to the Constitution that would officially define marriage as between a man and a woman.

A number of conservative and religious groups have invested tens of millions of dollars in selling this idea to powerful Washington insiders.

In just the past few months, the Mormon church spent barrels of money in a desperate attempt to convince California voters to support Proposition Eight – a law that defines marriage as only between a man and a woman.

In the end, the Mormon Church was successful, as the people of California voted (by a slim margin) to support Proposition Eight.

The next logical step for the opponents of gay marriage, is to demand that the government introduce a new amendment, that would ban same sex marriage in every state.
