The Big Brother reality tv show is a program in which a group of people live together in the Big Brother House, isolated from the outside world but continuously watched by television cameras.

The contestant’s job is to create a spectacle. Each series lasts for around three months, and there are usually fewer than 16 participants.

The housemates try to win a cash prize by avoiding periodic evictions from the house.

The idea for the show came during a brainstorm session at the production house of John de Mol Produkties (an independent part of Endemol) on September 4, 1997.

The first Big Brother broadcast was in the Netherlands in 1999 on the Veronica TV channel. It has been a prime-time hit in almost 70 countries.

From a sociological and demographic perspective, this format can be analyzed to see how people react when forced into close confinement with people who lie outside their comfort zone, since they may hold different opinions or ideals from other contestants, or simply be from a different group of people than a contestant is used to.

Indeed, the format is ideally suited to such analysis because the viewer sees how a person reacts on the outside through the constant recording of their actions and also what they feel on the inside through the Diary Room.

The results can often be violent or angry confrontations, providing entertainment to the public which is what is intended in order to distract people from what is really going on in society.

The Big Brother reality tv show is certainly accomplishing its goal along with other reality tv shows that detract from the issues of the day as more and more people tune in each week to their favorite shows.

Of course, when people think of Big Brother reality tv they think of the reality show that airs in the UK.

Though there are other shows whose main purpose is to humiliate and prank because people tune in to watch others go through turmoil for one reason or another.

In hoax reality shows, the entire show is a prank played on one or more of the cast members, who think they are appearing in a legitimate reality show.

Like hidden camera shows, these shows focus on pranks, although in these shows the hoax is more elaborate, the participants know they are appearing in a TV show (it is the true nature of the show that is kept secret from them), and the cameras are out in the open.

Also, the point of such shows often is to parody the conventions of the reality TV genre. The first such show was 2003’s The Joe Schmo Show.

Other shows, though not entirely hoax shows, have offered misleading information to some cast members in order to add a wrinkle to the competition. Examples include Boy Meets Boy and Joe Millionaire.
