A Voice of Dissent
A Voice of Dissent is Very Important to the Preservation of Freedom.
For years teachers have been telling students not to be afraid to ask questions.
There are no stupid questions, just unasked ones.
“If you think it is stupid,” teachers will say, “chances are it is the same one that several other people have but are too afraid to ask.”
Don’t be afraid; speak up.
The same concept applies when it comes to the form of government present in the United States; a government for the people, by the people.
It can be easy for people to just agree with whatever the popular opinion is regardless of whether they agree with it or understand it.
It can be intimidating to speak out, to be different than the rest.
However, if no one does than what we effectively do is create our own form of tyranny the tyranny of the masses.
For the tyranny of the masses not to rule and be controlled there must be someone willing to speak up against the norm.
There must be a voice of dissent amongst the masses.
The voice of dissent must speak for those not willing to speak or are afraid to disagree with the powerful masses.
The voice of dissent must exist to keep the masses from acting rashly.
A voice of dissent must exist in order to keep the government honest.
The founders were aware of this and instituted safeguards to keep the masses from ignoring that voice.
What was important in forming the new government was not to insure that most of the people had their rights protected, but all of the people.
Some of history’s bravest people have been the ones willing to speak up; to act as the voice of dissent amongst the masses.
A Dissenting Voice
Our Nation’s History
The history of the nation is full of dissenting voices, from the pre-revolution days to modern times.
Samuel Adams, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Frederick Douglass, Susan B. Anthony, Booker T. Washington, Langston Hughes, Bob Dylan, Martin Luther King, Jr., Betty Friedan, Ralph Nader all voices into the Preservation of Freedom to the Preservation of Freedom to the Preservation of Freedom that did not say the same things as the rest of the country.
Much of what they said and did was quite unpopular when they did it. Had they not, the nation would not be what it is today.
Many may think that is not such a great thing, the current state of the nation.
If not for some of the aforementioned people and the unpopular things they did imagine how much worse the nation could be?
Who is Next?
In this current day where the government can wire tap with ease whomever they want, search when and who they want, and pretty much run the gauntlet of civil rights violations without repercussions a voice of dissent is sorely in need.
Just speaking is not good enough. One that is willing to speak and speak loudly.
One that is not afraid to keep speaking even when the powers that be try to shut them up.
Hopefully a voice of dissent will rise before Big Brother becomes reality.
